Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
Summary
On the heels of a near-impossible success, Kaz Brekker and his crew of thieves have been double-crossed. Worse yet, one of their own is missing. But trustworthy allies are hard to come by in a place like the Barrel. They’ll have to fight to survive an amounting hoard of enemies, get their friend back, and enact revenge for the broken promises that have left each of their lives in ruin.
Overall Impressions
Did I cry? Yes. Was I surprised by this? No, no I was not. Darn you, Bardugo, and your irritatingly talented brain. (Please take a moment to imagine a fist being shaken.) I plowed through this sequel just as fast as I did with the first installment, Six of Crows, and was pleased to find it even grittier and more stirring. The characters’ development is to die for, and the completion of their stories is as triumphant as it is heartbreaking. If you love to root for the mistreated underdogs and justice seekers, this fantasy series will not disappoint. Clever, fast-paced, and deliciously dark, I highly recommend this duology. Bardugo continues to hold her place as one of my favorite authors.
