You’ve met our heroine, Marley Emmons, and so it’s time to introduce her guide.
Kind, patient, and somewhat awkward, Holden spends the early years of his life in the Pasture, the second oldest and only boy among five sisters. Lottie, the youngest, was born paralyzed from the waist down.
When people in the Pasture begin disappearing, they discover the village has become the hunting grounds for a gruesome monster. After Holden’s father is attacked, the elders summon Rumpelstiltskin as a last resort. In return for ridding them of the monster, Rumpelstiltskin demands a servant from among the villagers. Holden’s father offers Lottie because she is seen as the least valuable person in the village. Enraged, Holden quickly volunteers to take her place. Over the next several years, Holden acts as a guide for those indebted to Rumpelstiltskin, including none other than Marley Emmons.
His deep-seeded belief that anyone can be redeemed fuels him on their journey, but like Rumpelstiltskin, Holden has dark secrets and old enemies, many of which could get him and Marley killed.
